Activities on the framework of AOb Project implementation Meetings with parents Following the AOb Project implementation activities in Korca, meetings with parents and Monitoring Groups meetings were organised on 7 December 2012, in “Nuci Naci” and “Ismail Qemali” schools. Parents of children dropped out or at risk to drop out from school, subject of concrete work in the framework of Project implementation, including 14 parents who received the first food packages in the framework of Leon van Gelder Prize donation, as well as teachers, pupils and parents, especially from those who are members of Monitoring Groups, took part in both schools’ meetings.
Reports, wide discussions, conclusions, some of the main directions of the work to be done, as well as distribution of food packages were the main moments in both meetings. In “Nuci Naci” school, took part 39 participants, including parents, teachers, pupils and so on. The Headmaster of the school, Stavri Cano, the head of School Board, Fatos Xhangolli, the Chairman of Korca Roma Association, Arben Kosturi, took also part in the meeting. Head of Monitoring Groups’ Team, Sonela Mano, held a report on the work done in the framework of Project implementation, being focused especially on the role of parents in keeping all pupils in school, effectiveness of close collaboration among teachers, pupils and parents, some results achieved and the main directions of the work to be done. She spoke on the results achieved in school level, during this first period of Project implementation, mentioning that out of 14 pupils dropped out from school, 5 of them are turned back and other 1 has made some progress, while out of 65 pupils at risk to drop out, 22 of them are now attending the school regularly, having also some progress in school performance. Headmaster of the school, Stavri Cano, and teachers Bukurije Hyska, Marjana Cifligu, Elsa Tona, Viktora Vllahu, representing all the four Monitoring Groups, spoke about their experience working with parents, results achieved, problems they are facing with some pupils and so on. Parents, Lola Shkembi, mother of three daughters attending this school, Zoica Laloti, mother of pupil Samuel Laloti, Arife Mecani, grandmother of pupil Xhulian Micani, Elvira Dalipi, aunt of pupil Kristina Dalipi, spoke about the hard economical situations in their families and their efforts to bring their children back in school, thanking very much the teachers, school administration and AOb, working with them and assisting them with text books, school materials, clothes and some basic food for their families.
Being also among the participants, 7 parents who received the first food package from Gelder Prize donation, appreciated very much this assistance and thanked very much AOb and the donator, Andreas Schleicher, for this assistance. Pupil Elena Strati, representative of Pupils’ Government, spoke about their collaboration with teachers and parents, mobilising pupils themselves having a direct impact in the concrete results achieved so far. In “Ismail Qemali” school took part 38 participants, teachers, pupils and parents. Thomaq Ninka, Head of school Monitoring Groups, made evident some conclusions drawn from the questionnaires filled in by teachers with pupils they are monitoring, regarding their families, parents, their educational level, financial situation, causes of their drop out from school and so on. Then he spoke about the work done by monitoring groups’ members and other teachers and pupils in school, in families and in community, being focused especially on parents’ role and their mutual collaboration to realise the Project’s objectives. He pointed out the following results in school level: out of 18 pupils dropped out from school, 4 of them are turned back in school, while other 2 have made progress. In addition out of 110 pupils at risk to drop out from school, 25 of them are attending it regularly, also making some progress in learning. Teachers, Edlira Mitre, Altin Collaku, Irena Kocaqi, Ardiana Mecollari spoke about their respective Monitoring Groups situations, mentioning parents who have reflected positively towards their work, returning their children in school, as well as problems they are facing with some pupils and their parents, mainly because of their financial situations in their families. Parents Marsila Kostandini, mother of pupil Maradona Kostandini, Marjeta Kupe, mother of pupil Haxhire Kupe, Erika Zeqo, mother of pupil Leonard Zeqo, Eli Culi, mother of pupil Xhulia Culi, Bajame Mehmetali, mother of pupil Rome Mehmetali, all of those pupils returned in school after the concrete work of teachers and their classmates, appreciated the work of teachers and pupils, as well as the help for textbooks, other school supplies and food packages, promising to keep their children in school and also work with other parents to bring their children in school. The Headmaster, Ylli Kreka, mentioned concrete cases when teachers and parents have worked together to return pupils in school and thanked AOb for this support, promising that all teachers of “Ismail Qemali” school will continue to work hard with all pupils and their parents, especially with those who have more problems and difficulties in attending regularly the school. Speaking in both meetings, the Chairmen of FSASH, Xhafer Dobrushi, appreciated the commitment of all participants, the work they have done and results they have achieved, pointing out the special role of parents and the continuous work of teachers and pupils with them, in order to keep all pupils in school. Distribution of food packages, (from AOb Gelder Prize donation), for 14 families of pupils from those who have dropped out and are returned or promise to return to school, were special emotional moments in both schools. All participants expressed their gratitude to AOb for all this assistance. Meetings with Monitoring Groups' members in both schools Special meetings were also organised with Monitoring Groups’ members in both schools, where was discussed about the realisation of Project objectives and preparation for the activities to be organised in the future. A Project objectives progress Forms were elaborated in both meetings, aiming to be filled in by the first fortnight of January 2013, in order that their data to be used for the interim report in January 2013. Preparative measures for the next activities to be organised in spring next year, including the workshop, artistic, cultural and sportive activities, were also discussed in these meetings.
